Recipe: Brown Bread
Makes 1 loaf
200degC – 170degC

200g/6oz white flour
300g/11oz coarse brown flour
3 tablespoons bran
2 tablespoons wheatgerm
If you don’t have bran just use wheat and vice versa, you can also add chia seeds or milled oats
2 heaped teaspoons baking powder
1level teaspoon salt
1 dessertspoon treacle
600ml butter milk
1 level tablespoons sunflower oil
35g mixed seeds (optional)

Weigh all dry ingredients, sieve, and mix together in a large bowl.
Add the treacle to the buttermilk, then add in the sunflower.
Make a whole in the middle of the dry mix and pour in 2/3 of the buttermilk mixture.
Fold in the dry ingredients to the milk with a knife.
Add in your mixed seeds
Make sure your mixture is a little wet and if too dry add more wet ingredients and too wet add more flour.
Fold into a well oiled and floured 2lb loaf tin.
Tap tap the tin on the ground.
Bake in a preheated oven 200degC gas mark 6 for 20 minutes until risen
Reduce the heat to 170degC gas mark 3 for 40-60 min Every oven is different.
To know your breads is cooked, if it sounds hollow when tapped on the bottom it is cooked,
If not cooked, return it to the oven for 10-15 minutes
Wrap the bread in a damp tea towel to keep the outside soft.

  • A flawless fusion of flavors from the orient (fishcake and aromatic duck) with old school classics (gourmet burger and Guinness and beef stew). Super delicious and impeccable service. What's not to love? Will definitely return.

  • I ran a pub quiz in Murphy's last week and it was the perfect venue! The staff couldn't have been more helpful and even provided complimentary finger food on the night, a sound system and mic for the quizmaster and enabled us to display the scores on the TV screen! There was plenty of room for tons of participants, but it's nicely laid out so that no matter what number you have it would still feel full and cosy! Drinks were lovely too! I would definitely recommend it to anyone looking to do a fundraiser!
